About Zhejiang

Zhejiang Province is situated to the south of Taihu Lake on the coast of the East China Sea, its coastline extending over 2,200 kilometers. The Qiantang River flowing through the Province used to be called the Zhejiang River, after which the Province was named. Zhejiang Province covers an area of over 100,000 square kilometres with a population of 48.98 million (2006), which mainly comprises the Han, She, Hui, Manchu, Miao and other nationalities. Hangzhou is the capital of the Province.

Zhejiang Province has a temperate and humid climate with four distinctive seasons. The average annual temperature of the Province ranges from 15°C to 19°C (59°F to 66.2°F) January, the coldest month, has an average temperature of 2°C to 8°C (35.6°F to 46.4°F)...

Education

Since ancient times, Zhejiang people have handed down farming and education as their family tradition, emphasizing education as a means to prosper. Since the reform and opening up to the outside world, Zhejiang provincial government has been giving priority to education as a development strategy. In 1992, Zhejiang province set up the strategy of Rejuvenating Zhejiang via Science and Education and in 1999, it started to launch a campaign of building prominent counties of education. In 2002, it raised a strategic goal of establishing and developing Zhejiang as a “Prominent Province of Education In 2006, an outline for establishing a prominent province of education was drawn up. In 2010, the Provincial Outline for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) was formally released. After many years of efforts, Zhejiang has established a complete education system including basic education, vocational education, higher education and continuous education, with basic education in the province remaining its leading place in the whole nation, vocational education making great strides to be listed top and higher education enjoying most rapid development in China.

Leading Position of Basic Education

In 1989, Zhejiang Province universalized its elementary education. In 1997, it became the third province in China to “basically universalize the 9-year compulsory education, and basically eradicate youth's illiteracy In 2004, Zhejiang Province took a lead in universalizing 15-year education from three-year preschool education all through to senior high school education in China. At present, the rate of universalizing 15-year education has reached 97.6%. In 2011, Zhejiang has 1,870,000 kids in kindergartens, and 6,660,000 students in elementary and secondary schools. Gross enrollment rates in primary and junior secondary school has reached 99.99% and 99.92% respectively. Enrollment rate of 3-year preschool and admission rate of junior secondary school students into senior high school has reached 95.4% and 98.2% respectively. All main indexes of Zhejiang's basic education are taking a leading position in China.

Scholarship

The Zhejiang Government Scholarship sponsors students who are studying at or applying to study at higher education institutions (HEIs) in Zhejiang Province.
CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP
International students who apply to study or are studying at HEIs (see the attachment) in Zhejiang Province pursuing a bachelor degree, a master degree, a doctoral degree, or as a long-term general scholar.

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

1. Basic requirements:
a. Applicant for bachelor's degree program or for two/three-year college degree should have obtained senior high school diploma or equivalent education, and be under the age of 30.
b. Applicant for master's degree program should have obtained the bachelor's degree or equivalent education, get recommendation letters from 2 professors/assistant professors and be under the age of 35.
c. Applicant for doctoral degree program should have obtained the master's degree or equivalent education, get recommendation letters from 2 professors/associate professors and be under the age of 40.

2.Other requirements: a. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.
b. Applicants should comply with the laws and regulations in China, and comply with the rules and disciplines in the host HEIs.
c. Applicant should have a good knowledge of Chinese and provide proofs such as HSK certificates or other Chinese learning or Chinese examination certificates. For those applying for courses taught in English, the standard might be lowered.
d. Applicants should have a good academic record which is among top of the class.
e. Applicant should NOT be awarded with other Chinese Government Scholarships of all levels.
